William Basinski

Last week I finally saw one of my favorite ambient musicians, William Basinksi, play at Knockdown Center in Queens. Ambient shows are unique. “Show” is a generous term. Usually an ambient performance is more like a shared listening experience. Basinski had everyone sit on the floor (he insisted). The vast majority of the crowd obliged. And we sat for 40 minutes as an immersive light and music unfolded.

Basinski is, however, a rather colorful individual. His chattery commentary between songs completely upended the brooding, dark persona most would expect from musicians in the genre. This was a genuinely unique — and quirky — musical experience. I’d see Basinksi again. Also, Knowdown Center is a fantastic venue, and a perfect showcase for artful performances. Five stars. Would recommend.
